The Mobile Treatment Unit (MTU) is a vehicle-mounted septage treatment solution designed to treat septic tank waste on-site, with a processing capacity of 3,000 to 6,000 litres of sewage per hour. Installed on a small truck, the MTU operates using solid–liquid separation, sludge thickening, and effluent treatment processes, ensuring safe disposal of treated effluent and reduced sludge volume. The treated water quality is tested and validated by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs) and meets Indian as well as international discharge standards. The technology is approved by the Government of India, including the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs, Ministry of Jal Shakti, and the Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Prime Minister, and has been evaluated by reputed institutions such as Duke University, RTI International, BITS Pilani, and IITs. MTU was included by MoHUA in 2019 as an approved solution to eliminate manual desludging and promote safe, efficient faecal sludge management, and is available on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM).
