The NEWgenerator jointly developed by University of South Florida (USF) and Bhouma Envirotech Pvt Ltd, is an onsite sewage treatment system, which can harvests nutrient fertilizers, energy, and clean water from human waste. A high level of pathogen destruction is achieved to ensure safe sanitation. The treated water can be reused for flushing, gardening, cleaning etc. This robust, low-energy technology enables the system completely off-grid by installing solar panels. The Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor (AnMBR) system processes blackwater generated from toilets and other domestic sources. The system couples the advantages of high-rate anaerobic digestion with membrane filtration to ensure effluent is pathogen free, which is amenable for use in flushing and gardening purposes. The functionality is fully automated and involves minimal manpower involvement. The major advantages of the AnMBR system lie in its ability to produce a highly clarified and virtually pathogen free effluent at a small footprint. With the integration of solar cells, the system ensures off-grid and closed loop operation at small footprints, making it an efficient and compact system. Biogas that is generated during the operation can also be collected and used as a clean source of energy. The liquid effluent is also suitable for plant growth or in hydroponic systems for nutrient uptake and nutrient recovery.
